Sophia Emanuel Portrait

Australian-American soprano Sophia Emanuel is a Seattle-based performing artist known for her dynamic presence on both the operatic and musical theater stages. Lauded for her "spectacular display of vocal ability... expressiveness in her character's mannerisms, her comedic timing, and stage presence" (The Sound on Stage), Sophia is a passionate storyteller. Ms. Emanuel’s musicality is influenced by years as an orchestral French horn player, improvising jazz singer and alto saxophone player, as well as her eclectic tastes in musical genres, giving her a chameleon-like versatility. Equally at home in both contemporary and classical repertoire, Sophia has performed everything from Mozart to Glass, and has originated roles in four world premiere opera productions.

This season Ms. Emanuel made her company debut with Latitude Theatre as Ruth in the English language world premiere of Ingvar! A Musical Furniture Saga. Upcoming performances include another company debut as Donna/Sirene (Rinaldo) with Pacific Northwest Opera, and Spirit 1 (Cendrillon) with Vashon Opera, where she has previously been seen as Barbarina (Le nozze di Figaro) and Il Paggio (Rigoletto). She originated the role of Wife in the world premiere of historical drama Tacoma Method with Tacoma Opera. With a deep love for the bel canto repertoire, Sophia was thrilled to cover Amina while performing Il Notario and chorus in Puget Sound Concert Opera’s production La sonnambula. She is a two-time Encouragement Award winner from the Seattle Opera Guild’s Singers' Development Awards.

As a 2022 Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre Festival Artist, Ms. Emanuel covered Micaëla (Carmen), First Lady (The Magic Flute), and Mrs. Jenks (The Tender Land). The COVID-19 pandemic unfortunately saw her run as Queen of the Night/First Lady (The Magic Flute) with Pacific Northwest Opera in Schools Etc. cut short, but thankfully only after having had the opportunity to inspire several audiences of future opera lovers with the production. Sophia was a 2019 Studio Artist with Pittsburgh Festival Opera, where she covered the delightful Fiakermilli in Arabella. Sophia Emanuel holds an MM in Vocal Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she performed Ortensia/Eustacia/Ettalina (Bastianello) and Prima Conversa (Suor Anglica), as well as a concert of traditional vaudeville songs. She also holds a BFA in Vocal Performance from Carnegie Mellon University, where she was seen as Soprano 2 (Hydrogen Jukebox), Lucy Lockit (The Beggar’s Opera), and Meredith Parker (Bat Boy: The Musical).

Sophia resides in West Seattle with her husband and their far too many bicycles. Her non-performance credits include excellent vegan baking, being constantly told she looks like Bernadette Peters, and training for her first triathlon this August.
